LINUX STICK

47 LINUX STICK

having often boot problems with my old desktop
i need a boot usb stick ready for test.
here build up a new stick with some linux distros.

the usb stick is a 16GB FAT32 INTENSO RAINBOW LINE
( got in germany for the price of the 8GB one, about 8 euro ( because? its slow? )

install as boot menu:
* YUMI-0.1.0.1.exe
and download and install with it
- KNOPPIX_V7.2.0CD-2013-06-16-EN.iso
( from sysinfo: Linux 3.4.9 (i686) #34 SMP Debian GNU / Linuxwheezy / sid )
- linuxmint-15-cinnamon-dvd-32bit.iso
( from sysinfo: LinuxMint 15:olivia (i686) 3.8.0-19 generic /#29 Ubuntu SMP )
- linuxmint-201303-cinnamon-dvd-32bit.iso
( from sysinfo: LinuxMint Rel1 (debian) 32bit / Kernel Linux 3.2.0-4-486 Gnome 3.4.2 )
- slacko-5.3.3-4g-SCSI.iso
( from sysinfo: Slacko Puppy 5.3.3 Linux Kernel 3.1.10 slacko_4gA (i686)
- debian-live-7.0.0-i386-lxde-desktop.iso
this should be close to the version used on the RPI

and get a boot menu
-1- KNOPPIX
-2- Linux Mint Cinnamon 15 32b
-3- Linux Mint Debian 13
-4- SLACKO
-5- debian live 7 LXDE

all 5 boot and run,
As i am not a linux specialist don't expect a review about that versions...
here i will only note some things i noticed as good / bad

++ first test internet browser OK (1,2,3,4).
(5 iceweasel google ok, many other "Server not found" )

++ test movie OK
(1,4 GNOME Mplayer,2 movie player / VLC installed but crash / ,3 movie player ).
( now with older UBUNTU versions i tried, i had ever problems to play a movie, no player, no codec or no sound??? ) so that was impressive.
( 5 has no player installed )

-- for me the difference between windows and linux was that at boot
of linux you can see whats happening / if there are problems...
with windows you look at a stupid logo.
So just the first impression about the linux mint,
(2) they show their boot logo and the linux boot info list is unreadable flickering, for me a step back.
(3) no list, only logo

-- when i select REBOOT from any linux it says remove the stick first.?

independent from the linux thing here a short other test result:

my laptop has 2 USB3 ports and 1 USB2 port
yesterday got a USB3 STICK i test here:
(1) KINGSTON Datatraveler G3 ( usb2 ) 8GB
(2) KINGSTON Datatraveler 111 ( usb3 ) 8GB 290THB bananaIT

USB port, stick, read speed MB/s, write speed MB/s
USB3,(1), 23,10
USB3,(2) 333..118, 5.4
USB2,(2), 42, 5.4

so, for reading that usb3 stick is faster, factor 2 on usb2, factor 5..10 on usb3
for writing its slower, about factor 2, independent from port

now it depends on the usage of a stick,
- for data transport read and write same important,
- for backup write speed important.
- for run as bootstick ( linux.. OS from stick ) is the only application where
that layout could be useful, but poorly i can not test now, boot from stick i only know how to do from desktop and thats too old for usb3..

see also some onlineinfo

18.8.2015 update the USB stick:
get:
YUMI-2.0.1.8.exe Link
debian-live-8.1.0-amd64-lxde-desktop.iso Link
debian-live-8.1.0-i386-lxde-desktop.iso Link
archlinux-2015.08.01-dual.iso Link ( as it (not) says, no desktop )
ubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso Link while install create also a 1GB "casper" rw user file

update 20.5.2022
after a failed test i try again follow youtube

POP_OS
download 22.04 LTS NVIDEA
pop-os_22.04_amd64_nvidia_6.iso a 3.2GB file

RUFUS
download Rufus 3.18 portable and start ( i should have first moved it to a proper path )

burn it with Rufus to a 8GB USB stick
and "try DEMO mode"
